White Oak Harvest in Madison County

From July 24–26, RTCAR Director Brett Treadway joined Cherokee artists Mary Thompson, Pat Welch, and Charlie Welch for a white oak harvest and basket-making preparation in Madison County, NC. Hosted by LightEN, the multi-day gathering focused on harvesting white oak and preparing splits for traditional basket weaving.

The event is part of an ongoing effort to build reciprocal relationships rooted in trust, co-stewardship, and cultural exchange. Treadway and the artists shared knowledge and techniques while honoring the land-based practices that sustain Cherokee artistry.

RTCAR (Revitalization of Traditional Cherokee Artisan Resources) continues to support these meaningful collaborations that strengthen connections between people, place, and tradition.
